When we know that drinking copper infused water is good for the health, but the question is how much? How much copper treated water can be consumed on a day to day basis?

Copper is among the relatively small group of trace minerals which are vital for the normal function of the body. These minerals along with vitamins, fatty acids and amino acids are required for various metabolic processes. However, since the body cannot synthesize copper on its own, the human body has to rely on dietary sources to fulfill the daily requirement.

An average adult body requires anywhere between 1.4 mg to 2.1 mg of copper per kilogram of body weight. For example, a person who weights 60 kilograms needs approximately one-tenth of a gram of copper every day. It may be a small amount but it is essential for the overall well being of the human body.

Do we get enough copper?

It was earlier believed that most people consume sufficient amount of copper. But modern research has proved that it is not true. For example, in UK and USA, many typical meals have been analyzed for their mental content. Recent surveys have proved that only 25% of the US population consumes the adequate amount of copper recommended by the US Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academy of Sciences. A typical American diet provides only about half of the required amount of copper and in some industrialized countries it is less than 40% of the recommended dietary allowance.

How much copper is too much copper?

The World Health Organization has suggested that the daily intake of copper should not exceed 12mg/day for a healthy adult male and 10mg/day for adult females. The symptoms of copper toxicity usually include nausea, abdominal and muscle pain, and vomiting.

Copper-infused water contains a very small amount of copper in it and thus it is very safe to drink. But on the contrary, the human body requires copper in very small quantities and thus in some rare cases, copper infused water may lead to an excess of copper in the body. To avoid any such situation, it is recommended to drink copper infused water only in limited quantity. One to two glasses of copper water won’t cause you any harm unless you are suffering from a health condition such as Wilson’s disease.
