Diabetes is a serious medical issue which has been on the verge of only rising up. And if the studies are to be believed the number of people suffering from diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate. Based on a study, the number of diabetes-related prescriptions has increased from 26 million in 2011 to 35 million in 2015.
Diabetes cannot be cured completely and only be managed with proper medication, monitoring, exercise, and diet. Research has shown that copper helps in reducing the symptoms and other associated conditions significantly.
But before we learn about how to control the condition, let us learn more about the disease itself.
What is diabetes?
Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to effectively break down the glucose from the food you eat. The pancreas of a healthy person releases a hormone called insulin, which converts glucose into energy to be utilized by the cells. In a person suffering from diabetes, the pancreas stops producing the insulin, or doesn’t produce enough of it or is unable to use it effectively. This unprocessed glucose keeps on accumulating in your blood instead of reaching the body cell which leads to high level of blood sugar level.
Diabetes may lead to several other health conditions such as:
- Heart diseases
- Kidney disease
- Stroke
- Dental issues
- Eye problems
- Foot problems
- Nerve damage
- Types of diabetes
Symptoms of diabetes
Symptoms of diabetes may vary for different types of diabetes. For type 1 diabetes, the symptoms may include vitiligo, weight loss and diabetic ketoacidosis where the body produces little to no insulin which increases the blood sugar level drastically.
For type 2 diabetes, the patient may experience numb or painful feet or dark patches in the folds of armpit/neck.
Other common symptoms of diabetes commonly include:
- Excessive thirst/hunger
- Frequent visits to the bathroom
- Skin irritation, itchiness, and dryness
- Drowsiness/fatigue
- Blurred vision
- Slow healing wounds
How is copper helpful in reducing the symptoms of copper?
Based on various studies conducted over the last few decades it has been established that copper can help with the prevention as well as the treatment for several diseases. Until the 90’s, copper was considered the reason behind various health problems. But it was later found out that copper is a crucial mineral for the human body as it helps with the functioning of over 50 enzymatic processes.
The human body barely contains any free copper with only one copper ion per cell. Out of all the copper present in the human body, 95% of it is bound to ceruloplasmin and is not available. On the other hand, the copper protein or peptide-bound copper can be metabolized by the human body easily. The copper which you get from the copper dense food items or copper supplements is rich in the latter.
Since people suffering from diabetes often have skin conditions, inflammation, and slow healing capacity and can help them in balancing the symptoms of the disease.
For diabetics, drinking copper treated water every day can help with controlling the symptoms. When water is stored overnight in pure copper utensils such as copper water bottles and copper tumblers, etc., tiny particles of copper leach into the water making it copper charged. Regular consumption of this copper treated water helps in minimizing the symptoms of diabetes to some extent.
